On the 25th already, most of the traces of the attacks in Dahab were cleaned up, the bridge repaired and the windows replaced. Some tourists left, but the big majority decided to stay and support the people there.
Peaceful demonstrations were organised, where workers and owners from Dahab marched together with tourists to condam the attacks and demonstrate for peace. The media liked the idea, so Jimmy & Friends could be seen on CNN, BBC World and ARD.
Another demonstration followed last friday. Apart from that, everyone in Dahab is working hard to let the tourists spend the rest of their vacation in the most enoyable and peaceful way as possible!
My friend Sarah went back to Dahab this week end again, not only to enjoy the place but also to make a stand: Don't be afraid, continue to go to Dahab and support the people living and working there! .... and i fully support this idea! :)
On the 24th, in the afternoon, we received the shocking news: 3 bombs had exploded in Dahab, hitting this little paradise in high season of Easter vacation and Egyptian national holiday.
I managed to reach Jimmy and he, the boys as well as the tourists I had sent there were all unhurt, El Hamdullilah! Shortly after that the phone network broke down and I still didn't have any news of 3 of my friends spending their vacation in Dahab. It was not until 1am that I finally reached Sarah! She as well has her two flatmates were shoked but fine!
As much as I was happy and relieved to know that all people I know in Dahab were not hurt, as much I was sad for the people who lost their loved ones in this attack.
To the occasion of my birthday, I took 3 days off work.... pure relaxation, nice present to myself ;-)
Even the French President Jaques Chirac was so thoughtful to organise a huge birthday party for me..... well, ahemmm, reality is slightly different: ...As Jaques and Bernadette Chirac happened to be in Cairo on my birthday, I had the pleasure to be invited to a reception for all French citizens living in Cairo. It was held in the Intercontinental Heliopolis. The President spoke for 15 minutes and then took almost an hour to walk through the crowd, shake hands and talk to his citizens. About as exiting to see Jaques Chirac in close up, was the site and taste of the excuisite finger food served ;-) And yes, unexpected in Egypt, I also got to have some Champagne on my birthday! merci Jaques et Bernadette ;-)))
In the afternoon followed a more traditional but nevertheless lovely celebration with cake and tea, organised by Ahmed and New Palace Family.... Merci!
Later at night, my Belgian friend Sarah organised another celebration for me, starting in Zamalek and ending in the Club of the Nile Hilton, where else? ;-)
Again, thanks to all those who made me forget that i am approaching the 30es and let me enjoy this day by celebrating with me, sending me messages and calling me!
Time flies by, already a month I have not written on this blog and so many things have happened....
Let's start with the news of my new apartment. Yes! I finally I found an apartment :))) It is situated in a calm street in downtown Cairo. It is fairly big: 2 bedrooms (I am sharing the flat with an american girl), kitchen, bathroom, big livingroom with a comfortable couch - waiting for you, should you like to drop by ;-) - nice big windows with a beautiful view on downtown, satellite TV with thousands of chanels, washing machine, etc, etc....
I enjoyed very much unpacking all my stuff after having lived out of my suitcases for 6 months.
Finally I got a home, sweet home :)
